Quarter Sawn Spatula

The sautéing has your mind wondering out the window. The woods are alive and forever as your hand draws the connection. The lardons remind you of your task.

  • We've had this special piece of white oak siting in the shop for years as waited for inspiration to hit us.  White oak is a beautiful wood but it really shows it's glory when you quarter saw it making all the grain run vertical (looking from the end of the boards).  Quarter sawing exposes the ray cells of the tree which store starches and sugars.  In wood working these are called Ray Fleck, which almost look like tiger stripes running perpendicular to the wood grain.  We wanted to show off as much of the ray fleck pattern with a wide blade continuing into a carved branch style and handle and ending with a charred tip to better contrast the copper button.
